Hi! My name is Em Hart and I am a professional makeup artist in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Before moving to the Maritimes in 2018, I grew up in North Vancouver, British Columbia. I was first introduced to the artistic world by my mother who is an acrylic painter and graphic designer, and my father who introduced me to the film industry, through his work as a stunt rigger in British Columbia.
The first time I ever had my makeup done was when I was seven for a circus show; it was just simple blue eyeliner swirled on my face and some red lipstick, but to me it felt like magic. I fell in love with makeup that day. I love makeup as an art; it is fulfilling to see my makeup looks come together and how the colours complement each other. When I do makeup for other people, it is rewarding to see how empowered and beautiful they feel when they look at their reflection.
I went on to be a circus performer from 2014 to 2019. I did my makeup for over a hundred circus shows, and even helped with other performers' makeup. Expressing my creativity like this made me feel empowered. When I started university, I began to experiment more with avant-garde makeup looks.
For a lot of my adult life, I was in post-secondary school; I achieved my Bachelors of Science with a Major in Biology and a Minor in Psychology from Dalhousie University. My time at Dalhousie gave me the experiences needed to grow as a person and figure out my values, morals, and goals in life. After my Bachelor's degree, I pursued a career in paramedicine which enabled me to serve my local community for two years. As a paramedic I helped care for people on the worst day of their lives - I had to tell individuals that their loved ones had passed, guide them through crisis, and comfort them through those moments. Each day as a paramedic was different and often mentally challenging - I firmly believe it has prepared me for any future endeavours. While that chapter of my life has come to a close, I continue to search for ways to improve myself as well as help others around me.
In the beginning of 2026, I started school at HDC to become a professional makeup artist. During this time I honed foundational makeup skills, as well as learned advanced techniques such as airbrush and prosthetics. While at HDC I volunteered for the Phoenix Youth House's Prom event, the 2026 NSCAD Fashion Show, and the 2026 Pump Couture Fashion Show hosted by Diabetes Canada. As of June 2026, I have exceeded twenty eight days of volunteer work as key makeup artist on NSCAD thesis film projects, during which I completed over ten different makeup looks on multiple actors, across many days of shooting.
My main goal with my makeup career is to work in the film industry as a makeup artist, however,I hope to do freelance work as well; such as makeup for photoshoots, fashion shows, theatre performances, and weddings. I specialize in vibrant looks using mediums such as glitter and sequins, however I am able to complete whatever look the client wants. I am excited to see what the future holds and where this career will take me.
